It’s four days until my wedding. I was looking up photos for my florist as “inspiration” (check out my Pinterest Boards). This says so many things about my wedding: books, ease, simple elegance and romanticism.

Now that I have had a respite its time to keep digging, scheduling, and taking Douglas Adams at his word(s).

Birthday, Wedding, Work, and the 14th Amendment

On Thursday I returned to work, no more bed-rest. Admittedly, my bookstore job is only four hour shifts and I sit for most of it. I’m at work right now, actually, so you can tell its incredibly trying for my body.

Anyway, I’m beginning to feel cheerful again. I’m not bogged down by loss. I know I still haven’t scraped the surface of grief for the miscarriage. I have too much to do with a wedding in fourteen days to spare emotion. My that sounds strange to “say aloud”. Tonight is my hen party and James’ stag. A lot of our closest friends are going to take us out and celebrate our soon-to-be nuptials. I very much hope we can all reconvene before the night ends because a lot of the guys are my close friends as well and I don’t see too much of a point in a gender dividing line.

Especially now that my state is coming to close to approving a gay marriage bill! I’ve signed petitions and mouthed off about this for years and I am so pleased to see progress! I have friends who have made this their career and I can only imagine the joy and hope they feel — and I’m sure the fear that this could all come crashing  back down, as the vote in the house was soclose. But this gives me more hope  that by my first wedding anniversary I can know that a couple can wed in my hometown regardless of the sexual organs, because we all know that that is what truly makes a difference in the character of a person.

So let’s see, what else has happened in this busy time? Oh, James turned 29 on Thursday. With the wedding being so close and obviously our parties tonight we thought it would be a good idea to postpone birthday party until the spring/summer. He’s never had a birthday in June so, hey! But I couldn’t completely ignore his big day, so I made a few little decorations out of paper and some thread. I have to remember to put twine on my shopping list, I searched for twenty minutes and had to resort to my sewing box. I should have noticed that the framed photos were askew, ah well.

I tend to make bad first impressions

Every new blog has that awkward introductory post. The post that should contain the thesis, fun information about the creators, highlights of home-life, funny moments, and maybe even a few photos for good measure.

The problem occurs when you have an awkward person like myself. I will either say too little and leave someone wondering if I have a personality at all, or, and this is the more likely scenario, go into way too much detail. This is followed by attempts to laugh it off and somehow, inexplicably, tell an embarrassing story about a body part. Thank god my dating days are over.

Maybe the best thing to do is approach this like a baseball card; give the basic stats, a humorous quip and a posed photo. Let’s try it:

Name: Kate
Hometown: Baltimore
Age: 26
Position: Soon-to-be wife, barista, bookstore hound, college student

Name: James
Hometown: Baltimore
Age: 28
Position: Soon-to-be husband, high school teacher (social studies)

Well, that provides some bare bones information but I think we’re still leaning towards too sparse. Maybe if we try the D&D (3e since I haven’t played in forever) approach:

Character Name: Kate
Race: Half-elf
Class: Bard
Alignment: Neutral Good
Gender: Female
Level: TBD

Character Name:  James
Race: Human
Class: Paladin
Alignment: Lawful Good
Gender: Male
Level: TBD

There, that fleshes things out a bit. Maybe if I’m feeling really into later this evening I can draw up some character sheets. But I doubt it. Maybe if I roll for initiative?

Other details to note, we share our home with a fabulous beagle named Chloe and a fuzzball cat named Lola. We also have a roommate, at the moment, but he is soon departing to get a PhD in Theoretical Physics. This will leave just the two of us in the house (minus the pets) which I imagine will lead to all kinds of fun scenarios with bright yellow tape dividing the house. My side is always the side with the books and the bathroom.
